DO:

  • Sit up straight with your back supported and feet flat on the floor;
  • Keep your wrists straight, fingers curved and move from your shoulder;
  • Keep elbows close to your body;
  • Use a light touch;
  • Take frequent breaks.

DO NOT:

  • Slouch in your chair, leaning forward over the keyboard;
  • Rest your wrists on a wrist rest;
  • Stretch and tense your fingers;
  • Pound the keys;
  • Type for hours without a break.

HEALTHY TYPING TECHNIQUES 1 – 5

  1. Let your hands rest by your sides. Keeping this relaxed position, bring your hands to the keyboard. Your fingers should be curved. Gently hit the keys with your fingertips.
  2. Keep wrists straight. For the wrists to be straight your hand must be parallel to the floor and the middle finger must be aligned with the centre of the wrist.
  3. Move from your shoulder and not from your wrist.  Get used to using your whole arm to move your hands over the keys.
  4. When you type, let your hands float above the keyboard. Position your fingers over the keys and then type. Rest your arms when you are not typing.
  5. Use the lightest touch possible.

IMPORTANT EXERCISES FOR TYPISTS 1 – 5

  • Take your left ear to your shoulder, then repeat to the right side;
  • Pull your chin gently backwards to produce a double chin;
  • Breast stroke with your arms and then circle your shoulders backwards;
  • Stand up, stretch your arms above your head and sit back down again.
